for some time now, i have been rewiring a 67 GTO for a coworker.
it was a mess. the project was started by someone who didn't know what
they were doing.
much of the work involved repairing past mistakes
but the project is drawing to a close now
it's a shame. i kind of enjoyed this. it was good money too.
the owner of the car is thrilled with the work. he got to fire it up today
for the first time since the wiring project started. oh, and btw...
he's good friends with the president of the company i work for.
most american muscle cars don't corner well because most of their
owners set them up for the drag strip... even when they will spend 97%
of the time driving on public roads.
the whole concept of the muscle car was cramming as much horsepower as
possible into the lightest car possible - for drag racing. most of the
car lines that became muscle cars started out as (60s era) economy
cars. but if you go with a more conservative engine size, and with the
proper suspension package and a decent set of tires, these light
(usually unibody) cars will handle very well.
my first car was a 79 coupe deville with a 7.0l 425CID big block. i
loved the power and the V8 roar, but the 3 ton lead sled handled like
a brick. i have since then owned several camaros, firebirds, mustangs,
and a few japanese/european imports. all of these cars handled very
well.
it's all about matching the car to the application. don't
try to road-race in a drag strip car.
true - but i like to have both attributes in my vehicles , i
prefer my big power jap cars - have owned a supra , skyline , and
now im' working on a big power misubitshi legnum.. shall try
to get a journal up with them + specs in soon :)
My goal...
1970 chevelle ss396
engine: 402 bored out to 427
must include a bunch of goodies: roller rockers, super comp hooker headers,
3" flowmaster exhaust, 11" hoosier rubber out back, edelbrock
750, and more
12 secs in the quarter mile
500 h.p.
exterior: original black cherry with black stripes
interior: all original and mint
awhile back chevy had a race engine that had the same stroke as their
427 but the bore was so large that it came out to be a 462.
short stroke with big bore for large valves. sounds like a good combo
A '68 is my dream car, year I was born and the year they
changed the body style. And that single horizontal tail light.
Good stuff man. Too bad you couldn't keep it man, that must
have been a blast to drive.
