I know there are a few around Trondheim, a friend of mine
plays in one, but I find them way too pretentious and
can't help you on those. Oslo is going nuts so far, but
really, if you still didn't listen La Masquerade
Infernale, Sideshow Symphonies from Arcturus and Blood
inside from Ulver... they're the three heralds of
"modern" avantgarde Norwegian metal. You should
take a look at the newest Solefald (not red/black) and
Enslaved. Enslaved are wobbling towards avantgarde for
reasons still obscure to me.
Won't mention Dødheimsgard of course. Can't even
pronounce 'avantgarde' if you've never heard
Supervillain Outcast or 666 int.
First 4 ulver albums are awesome, the rest not so much
IMHO.
Supervillain Outcast , 666 international are two of the
most played albums ever for my ears. Sucks that Czral
got wheelchair-bound and won't be drumming any
more.
Arcturus two first albums are great, the following two
are good. Wonder if they'll stay inactive.
Have to check out Solefald and newer Enslaved.
Arcturus will definitely stay inactive.
Fuckers.
You're the first one I hear saying
"Ulver's first 4 albums are
awesome". Usually it's 'first 3 are
god, the rest is shit. With the exception of
Perdition City.'
Dunno why. Marriage was totally disgusting if you
want my two cents..
About Borknagar, I'd say them as well.
Empiricism is one of the greatest examples of
awesome pre-avantgarde metal, too bad that Origin
was a boring as staring a rock.
William Blake was an interesting
artist and that album got a nice unique feel
to it, but the third Ulver is by far the
best, with its evil low-tech sound.
Bought the first Borknagar (S/T) in 1996 and
still think that is their best work. I used
to party with their new singer Andreas
Hedlund back then. Nice fellar.
yes, the marriage is a very unique album
with some great emotions. i really like
this album. after that all they made is
shit, even perdition city with it's
lame sounds. first borknagar is great,
you know that garm was a important part
of this album. empiricism is one nice cd
too, vitersorg has done a great job
here. but i haven't heart
'epic' yet, is it good as
well?
Epic is the schyzophrenic edition
of Empiricism. When things are
pushed too far (and Marriage is too
far for me) I tend to not like
them. But if you like deep,
multilayered musical experiences it
might be good for you.
I concur, first borknagar kicks
ass--- but as of now I consider
them a Swedish band, really.
Vintersorg trasformed them in an
extension of his solo project -
which I liked up til Ödemarkens Son
and then it just fell apart.
